Antidiabetic Herbs of Ayurveda


Antidiabetic herbs helps in control or reduction of high levels of glucose in the blood in case of diabetes mellitus. There are different types of diabetes herbs, and their use depends on the nature of the diabetes, age and situation of the person, as well as other factors.



Achillea Millefolium

Botanical Name : Achillea Millefolium

Common Name : Common Yarrow, Bloodwort, Sneezewort, Solider’s Friend.
Part Used : Whole Plant
Habitat : Found in the himalayas at an altitude of 1,000 - 3,600 m from kashmir to kumaun.

Uses : It is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aromatic, carminative, cholagogue, diuretic, digestive, emmenagogue, stimulant, homeostatic, vasodilator and tonic.

It is useful in curing cold, influenza, heavy chest colds, chicken pox, diabetes, fever, flu’s, measles, menses, menorrhagia, soreness, piles, stomach sickness, flatulence, heartburn, colic, liver diseases, toothache, ulcers, infections, swelling and urinary diseases. It is also helpful in curing internal and external bleeding, blood clots, and act as blood-purifier and tones blood vessels. The leaves and flower heads are used as a tonic and vapour bath for fever. It has hypotensive effect



Adiantum Capillus

Uses : Maidenhair fern is antioxidant, astringent, liver bile stimulator, blood cleanser, cardiotonic decongestant, detoxifier, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, depurative, antidandruff, vermifuge, hepatoprotective, hypocholesterolemic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, stimulant and tonic. It is mainly useful in respiratory problems, hair loss, gallstones, liver problems, wounds, diabetes, skin problems, diarrhea, and dysentery. It is helpful to cure jaundice, convulsions and many chronic diseases.

Leaves are edible and used in making tea and other refreshing drinks. Leaves are used as garnished material on foods. It breaks up stone in the bladder, spleen, and kidneys. Paste of leaves is useful in headaches and chest pains.

Uses : The flowers and fruits are bitter, sweet, astringent, acrid, anodyne, stomatitis, expectorant, depurative, anthelmintic, deodorant, digestive, styptic, febrifuge and good tonic.

Flowers and fruits are useful in rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, catarrh, anorexia, headache, foul ulcers, flatulence, colic diarrhea, dysentery, skin diseases, burning sensation, excessive sweating, diabetes, vomiting, fever and general debility. Leaves are useful in gout and arthralgia. Root is chewed to relieve rashes on the tongue.





Cordyceps Sinensis

Uses : It is used in various treatments including immunologic, antiarrythmic, hypoglycemic, antieoplastic and erythropoietic effects. It is used to strengthen the body after exhaustion or long-term illness and for impotence, neurasthenia, backache cough, anemia, tuberculosis, lower back pain, infertility, irregular menstruation, night sweats and senile weakness. It has been used as an aid in organ transplant surgery and for the treatment of viral hepatitis and lupus. It is also helpful in reducing high cholesterol and improving male function. Uses : According to Ayurveda, it is astringent to bowels and very useful in treatment of biliousness, vaginal complains, fever, ulcers, erysipelas, vomiting, inflammations and leprosy. According to Unani system of medicine, latex is maturant, lessens inflammations, aphrodisiac, tonic, vulernary and is useful in piles, nose-diseases, gonorrhea etc. The aerial root is styptic and is useful in syphilis, biliousness, dysentery and inflammation of liver. It acts as an astringent, antidiarrheal, antidysenteric, hemostatic and antihemorrhoidal. The tree is widely planted for shade and its leafs are used for fodder.

Helicteres Isora

Uses : The roots and stem barks are expectorant, demulcent, astringent, constipating, lactifuge and antiglactagogue. They are useful in colic, scabies, biliousness, thoracic empyema, gastric problems, diabetes, diarrhea and dysentery.

Fruits are acrid, astringent, refrigerant, demulcent, stomachic, vermifuge, and haemostatic. They are useful in ophthalmic, flatulence, diarrhea, dysentery, wounds, ulcers, hemorrhages and diabetes. The powdered seeds are used to cure ulcers in ears, dysentery and stomachache. It has Insulin-sensitizing and hypolipidemic property and has the potential for use in the treatment of type-2 diabetes. Root juice is used in antidiarrhoeal and antidysenteric formulations.




Momordica Charantia

Uses : It has been used extensively in folk medicine as a remedy for diabetes. In Ayurveda, the fruit is considered as emetic, laxative, antibilous, tonic, stomachic, stimulant and alternative. It has been found to be extremely good in Diabities.

The fruit is useful in gout, rheumatism and subacute cases of the spleen and liver diseases. It is supposed to purify blood and dissipate melancholia and gross humours. It has also been shown to have hypoglycaemic properties (anti-diabetic) in animal as well as human studies. It is Kapha and Pitta suppressant and due to its property it is very helpful in cooling the body so as suppresses the skin related problems caused by excess of Pitta. Due to its bitter taste, it is useful in suppressing the worm infestation.

Uses : Phyllanthus blocks DNA polymerase, the enzyme needed for the hepatitis B virus to reproduce. It also prevent from jaundice,diabetes, dyspepsia, ulcers, sores, swellings, ophthalmia and chronic dysentery. Whole plant is useful for the treatment of some forms of gonorrhea, menorrhagia, dropsy, menorrhagia and other genito- urinary affections of a similar type. A poultice of the leaves mixed with salt cures itch and other skin affections. It is bitter, astringent, cold, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and useful in liver disorders, cough, asthma, jaundice, spleen disorders. Phyllanthus may help decrease the amount of hepatitis B virus found in the blood stream.




Pongamia Pinnata

Habitat : Pongamia is widely distributed in tidal and beach forests of india.

Uses : Pongamia seeds and oil is anthelmintic, styptic, and depurative. It is useful in rheumatism arthritis, whooping cough, skin alinments and scabies. Seed oil is mainly used in cosmetics, in soap making and as a lubricant. Seed oil is also used as insecticidal, nematicidal and bactericidal.

Flowers are useful to quench dipsia in diabetes and for alleviating vata and kapha.

Leaves are digestive, laxative and useful in flatulence, dyspepsia, diarrhea, leprosy and cough.

Bark is anthelmintic and used in pesticides. Dried leaves are used in stored grains to repel insects. The bark also yields a black gum that is used to treat wounds caused by poisonous fish.

It turns the water blue as soon as it comes in contact with the water. It is good for elephantiasis, leucoderma, diarrhoea, dysentery, rectalgia, cough and greyness of hair. The bark is used as an astringent and in toothache.
The bruised leaves are considered useful as an external application for boils, sores and skin diseases.

Uses : According to Ayurveda, this herb is a bitter tonic, stomachic. It is useful in liver disorders, eyes, heart. A strongly bitter tonic it is an excellent remedy for a weak stomach, especially when this gives rise to nausea, indigestion and bloating and it has also been shown to protect the liver.

It is best known as the main ingredient in Mahasudarshana churna, a remedy containing more than 50 herbs. It also contains xanthones which are reputedly effective against malaria and tuberculosis, and also amarogentin, a glycoside that may protect the liver against carbon tetrachloride poisoning.

The whole plant is an excellent drug for intermittent fevers, skin diseases intestinal worms, bronchial asthma, burning of the body, regulating the bowels. The root of the plant is useful in checking hiccups and vomiting. It is used in the liquor industry as a bitter ingredient.



Syzygium Cumini

Decoction of the fruit is used in case of enlargement of the spleen.
