Anthelmintic Herbs of Ayurveda

 



Anthelmintic herbs used to destroy and expel parasitic worms from the gastrointestinal tract. Anthelmintic is used against roundworms, tapeworms and flukes. Infection of these worms causes significant problems like frequently profuse diarrhea, anemia, of the liver, lungs, etc.
Vermifuge causes worms to be paralyzed and then eliminated in the stool. Rarely these drugs kill the worms directly.



Abutilon Indicum

Common Name : Abutilon, Indian Mallow

Habitat : Present in sub-himalayan tract and hills upto 1,200 m and in hotter parts of india.

Uses : It is sweet, cooling, digestive, laxative, expectorant, diuretic, astringent, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, demulcent and aphrodisiac.

It is useful in gout, tuberculosis, ulcers, bleeding disorders, and worms. Decoction used in toothache and tender gums. Demulcents of leaves are locally applied to boils and ulcers. Roots are prescribed in fever, chest affection and urethrities.


Adiantum Capillus

Botanical Name : Adiantum Capillus
Family Name : Pteridaceae
Common Name : Maidenhair Fern, Lady Fern.
Part Used : Fronds, Leaves And Rhizomes.
Habitat : Woodland garden; dappled shade; shady edge and cultivated beds.

Uses : Maidenhair fern is antioxidant, astringent, liver bile stimulator, blood cleanser, cardiotonic decongestant, detoxifier, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, depurative, antidandruff, vermifuge, hepatoprotective, hypocholesterolemic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, stimulant and tonic. It is mainly useful in respiratory problems, hair loss, gallstones, liver problems, wounds, diabetes, skin problems, diarrhea, and dysentery. It is helpful to cure jaundice, convulsions and many chronic diseases.

Leaves are edible and used in making tea and other refreshing drinks. Leaves are used as garnished material on foods. It breaks up stone in the bladder, spleen, and kidneys. Paste of leaves is useful in headaches and chest pains.



Anethum Graveolens

Habitat : It is found in tropical and sub-tropical parts of india and cultivated throughout india.

Uses : The fruits are acrid, aromatic, bitter, digestive, carminative, stomachic, stimulant, antispasmodic, antihelmintic, anodyne, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, emmenagogue, galactagogue, expectorant, cardiotonic, febrifuge, antispasmodic and antidysenteric.

It is useful in flatulence, colic, dyspepsia, intestinal worms, digestive problems, insomnia, inflammation, hiccough, cough, asthma, bronchitis, fever, ulcers, skin diseases, haemorrhoids and cardiac debility. It acts as stimulant for lactation.

Fruits and leaves are used as spice for flavoring salads, soups, pickles and breads, mainly by food industry. It is also used as insecticide. Dill's essential oil relieves intestinal spasms and griping and helps to settle colic, hence it is often used in gripe water mixtures. Also used in making vinegar & as a flavouring in pickled gherkins.



Callicarpa Macrophylla

Habitat : Western himalaya from kashmir to assam, arunachal pradesh and in northern andhra pradesh, also in maharashtra, uttar pradesh and uttaranchal.

Uses : The flowers and fruits are bitter, sweet, astringent, acrid, anodyne, stomatitis, expectorant, depurative, anthelmintic, deodorant, digestive, styptic, febrifuge and good tonic.

Flowers and fruits are useful in rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, catarrh, anorexia, headache, foul ulcers, flatulence, colic diarrhea, dysentery, skin diseases, burning sensation, excessive sweating, diabetes, vomiting, fever and general debility. Leaves are useful in gout and arthralgia. Root is chewed to relieve rashes on the tongue.



Calotropis Procera

Uses : Calotropis procera plays an important role in improving soil fertility and improved soil water holding capacity. The root bark is febrifuge, anthelmintic, depurative, expectorant, and laxative. The powdered root promotes gastric secretions and useful in asthma, bronchitis, and dyspepsia. Dried whole plant is good tonic, expectorant, depurative and anthelminthic.
Madar root-bark is very largely used in India as a treatment for elephantiasis, leprosy, and in chronic eczema. It also used as antidote substance and for abortive purposes. Leaves are useful in the treatment of paralysis, arthralgia, swellings and intermittent fevers. Flowers are useful in asthma, catarrh, anorexia, inflammations and tumours.



Cassia Occidentalis

Uses : The plant is bitter, purgative, laxative, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, hepatoprotective, anti-malarial, analgesic, vermifuge and febrifuge. It mainly used to detoxify liver, use to cure internal bacterial and fungal disorders, to kill parasites and viruses, enhances immunity, and promotes perspiration. It is also helpful in cough, convulsions, reduces blood pressure, reduces spasms and as cardiotonic. Seeds are brewed into a coffee-like beverage for asthma, and a flower infusion is used for bronchitis. Leaves are used in the treatment of gonorrhea, fevers, urinary tract disorders and edema.


Cinnamomum Camphora

Uses : Bark is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, analgesic, analeptic, anthelmintic, antispasmodic, aromatic, aphrodisiac, carminative, diaphoretic, sedative, stimulant, narcotic and tonic.

It is used as nervine depressant in case of hysteria, epilepsy, chorea and convulsions. It acts as stimulant for cardiac, circulation and respiration. It is useful in measles, typhoid, whooping cough, asthma, and hiccup. It is recommended in case of cough, cold, toothache and liver disorders.

Camphor oil is antihelmintic, antirheumatic, antispasmodic, cardiotonic and sedative. It is used for treating joints and muscle pains, cold sores and skin diseases. Camphor oil is best used for sedating nervy types particularly when associated with depression. Also used an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer.



Cissampelos Pareira

Habitat : Found in tropical region of india.

Uses : Velvet leaf or Abuta is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, antioxidant, antispasmodic, diuretic, hypotensive, muscle relaxant, uterine relaxant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, analgesic, antihemorrhagic, cardiotonic, diaphoretic, expectorant, febrifuge, hepatoprotective stimulant and tonic.

It is known as Midwife's herb as mainly used in women aliments. It is used for menstrual problems, hormonal imbalance, ease childbirth, postpartum pain, prevent threatened miscarriage, and control uterine hemorrhages, hormonal acne and premenstrual syndrome. It is used for heart problems, kidney stones, kidney infections and pains, asthma, arthritis, muscle cramps and stomach pains.

It is also used to kill bacteria, prevents convulsions, ulcers, indigestion, skin irritations, cough, fever, intestional worms, wounds and in snake bite. It is used against poisonous snake bites and is very effective in skin related aliments.




Embelia Ribes

Habitat : Present throughout india, in area upto 1,500 m in hilly regions.

Uses : Embelia root bark is acrid, astringent, anthelmintic, antifertility, antioestrogenic, carminative, digestive, laxative, soothing, stimulant, stomachic, and thermogenic. It is effective against intestinal parasites and intestinal worms. It is used in abdominal disorders, skin fungal infections, flatulence, constipation, indigestion, headache, hemorrhoids, lung diseases, obesity, piles, pneumonia, mouth ulcers, toothache and sore throat. Its decoction is useful in insanity and heart diseases.

Leaves are astringent, thermogenic, demulcent and depurative in nature. It is useful in skin diseases and leprosy.

Fruits are acrid, astringent, anthelmintic, bitter, brain tonic, carminative, contraceptive, diuretic, febrifuge, laxative, stimulant, and thermogenic. It is useful in skin diseases, leprosy, nervous debility, dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, tumors, asthma, fever, ascaris infestation and general debility. Paste is being used for mouth wash and avoiding cavities. It is being also used in skin related problems. Decoction of the roots is given in insanity and heart diseases.




Gmelina Arborea

Habitat : It is scattered at an altitude of 5,000 ft. in deciduous forests of india and andamans.
Product offered : Bark
Uses : The roots are bitter, sweet, pungent, anodyne, demulcent, lactagogue, refrigerant, stomachic, galactogogue, laxative, anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory and tonic. The roots alleviate vata and kapha, have hot potency and heavy attribute. It is used against anthrax, bilious disorders, bites, blood disorders, cholera, colic, convulsions, diarrhea, dropsy, epilepsy, fever, gout, headache, intoxication, rheumatism, sore throat, burning sensations, and snakebite. The root decoction is used for abdominal tumors.

Fruits are sweet, alternative, aphrodisiac, astringent, diuretic and tonic. The fruit alleviates pitta dosa and possesses heavy and oily attributes. Fruits are used for heart diseases, leprosy, vomiting and burning sensations.

Flowers are sweet, cooling, bitter, acrid and astringent. They are useful in leprosy and blood diseases.

Paste of leaves used in fever, headache and in burning sensations. Root and Bark are useful in hallucination, piles, abdominal pains, burning sensations, fevers, 'tridosha' and urinary discharge. Leaf paste is applied to relieve headache and juice is used as wash for ulcers.



Helicteres Isora

Common Name : East Indian Screw Tree, Nut Leaved Screw Tree.

Habitat : Throughout india in deciduous forests.
Product offered : Pods
Uses : The roots and stem barks are expectorant, demulcent, astringent, constipating, lactifuge and antiglactagogue. They are useful in colic, scabies, biliousness, thoracic empyema, gastric problems, diabetes, diarrhea and dysentery.

Fruits are acrid, astringent, refrigerant, demulcent, stomachic, vermifuge, and haemostatic. They are useful in ophthalmic, flatulence, diarrhea, dysentery, wounds, ulcers, hemorrhages and diabetes. The powdered seeds are used to cure ulcers in ears, dysentery and stomachache. It has Insulin-sensitizing and hypolipidemic property and has the potential for use in the treatment of type-2 diabetes. Root juice is used in antidiarrhoeal and antidysenteric formulations.



Mallotus Philippinensis

Habitat : Found throughout tropical regions of india.

Uses : The reddish-brown glandular hairs are acrid, thermogenic, strong purgative, digestive, lithontriptic, styptic, strong vermifuge, alexipharmic, depurative, cathartic and aphrodisiac. They are useful in vitiated conditions of kapha and vata. It is used against intestional tapeworm, constipation, flatulence, scabies, wounds, ulcers, cough, renal and vesical calculi, hemorrhages, and other parasitic skin diseases.

Also a good source of Kamala dye which is used in coloring silk and wool, as anti-oxidant for ghee and vegetable oils.

Oil is used as hair-fixer and added in ointment, seed oil is used in paints and varnishes, seed cake is used as manure, wood pulp is suitable for writing and printing paper. It is one of the best vermicidal herbs. It is also used for coloring foodstuffs and beverages.




Mimusops Elengi

Botanical Name : Mimusops Elengi
Family Name : Sapotaceae
Common Name : Bullet-wood Tree, Indian Medaller
Part Used : Bark, Flowers, Fruits And Seeds.
Habitat : Throughout sub-tropical regions i.e. south india and andaman islands in india.
Product offered : Bark
Uses : The bark, flowers, fruits and seeds are astringent, cooling, anthelmintic, tonic, and febrifuge. It is mainly used in dental ailments like bleeding gums, pyorrhea, dental caries and loose teeth.

Extract of flowers used against heart diseases, leucorrhoea, menorrhagia and act as antiduretic in polyuria and antitoxin. The snuff made from the dried and powdered flowers used in a disease called Ahwa in which strong fever, headache and pain in the neck, shoulders and other parts of the body occurs.

Ripened fruits facilates in burning urination. The ripe fruit pounded and mixed with water is given to promote delivery in childbirth. Powder of dried flowers is a brain tonic and useful as a snuff to relieve cephalalgia.
Decoction of bark is used to wash the wounds.




Moringa Oleifera

Uses : The roots are bitter, acrid, thermogenic, digestive, carminative, anthelmintic, constipating, anti-inflammatory, emmenagogue, diuretic, ophthalmic, expectorant and stimulant. They are useful in dyspepsia, anorexia, verminosis, diarrhoea, colic, flatulence, paralysis, inflammations, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, fever, strangury, vesical and renal calculi. It is used in cough, asthma, bronchitis, pectoral diseases, splenomegaly, epilepsy and cardiopathy.

Leaves are anti-inflammatory, anodyne, anthelmintic, ophthalmic and rich in Vitamin A and C. They are useful in scurvy, wounds, tumors, inflammations and helminthasis.

Seeds are acrid, bitter, anodyne, anti-inflammatory, purgative, antipyretic and ophthalmic. They are useful in neuralgia, inflammations, intermittent fevers and opthalmopathy. Bark is regarded as an antiscorbic, and it exudes a reddish gum sometimes used for diarrhea. Oil is clear, sweet and odorless, It also is edible and useful in the manufacture of perfumes and hairdressings.




Nerium Indicum

Family Name : Apocynaceae
Common Name : Indian Oleander, Exile Tree.
Part Used : Roots, Leaves
Habitat : Cultivated throughout india.
Product offered : Leaves, Wholeplant, Stem
Uses : Roots are bitter, acrid, astringent, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac, stomachic, febrifuge, diuretic, emetic, expectorant, cardiotonic and anticancer. Useful in cardiac asthma, renal and vesical calculi, chronic stomache, joint pains, leprosy and ulcers.

Leaves are powerful repellent. A decoction of the leaves has been applied externally in the treatment of scabies and to reduce swellings.

The whole plant is said to have anticancer properties. The plant is used as a rat poison, a parasiticide and an insecticide. A green dye is obtained from the flowers. It is used in skin related problems and also helps in healing of wounds and also helps in reducing inflammation.
It also helps in maintaining the normal body temperature.




Oxalis Corniculata

Habitat : Common in damp shady places, roadsides, plantations and lawns in india.

Uses : Oxalis Corniculata plant is anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, astringent, depurative, diuretic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, lithontripic, stomachic and styptic. It is used in the treatment of influenza, fever, urinary tract infections, enteritis, diarrhea, traumatic injuries, sprains and poisonous snake bites. An infusion can be used as a wash to rid children of hookworms. The plant is a good source of vitamin C and is used as an antiscorbutic in the treatment of scurvy.

The leaves are used as an antidote to poisoning by the seeds of Datura spp., arsenic and mercury. The leaf juice is applied to insect bites, burns and skin eruptions. It has an antibacterial activity.

Yellow, orange and red to brown dyes are obtained from the flowers. The boiled whole plant yields a yellow dye. An infusion of leaves is used to remove opacities of the cornea and is dropped into the eyes for itching lids. A decoction of leaves is used as a gargle.





Pinus Roxburghii

Habitat : Found in himalayan region at 450-2,200 m elevation, from kashmir to bhutan.

Uses : The wood is acrid, bitter, sweet, thermogenic, emollient, aromatic, antiseptic, deodorant, haemostatic, stimulant, anthelmintic, digestive, liver tonic, diaphoretic and diuretic. It is useful in eye, ear and pharynx diseases, foul ulcers, haemorrhages, haemoptysis, worm infection, flatulence, liver diseases, bronchitis, inflammations, skin diseases, pruritus and giddiness.

Oleoresin is acrid, bitter, thermogenic, expectorant, anodyne, anti-inflammatory, purgative, rubefacient, vermifuge and demulcent. It is useful in cough, cold, asthma, chronic bronchitis, inflammations, liver and spleen diseases, kidney and bladder infections, gonorrhea, scurvy, epilepsy, haemorrhoids and tuberculosis.

Oil obtained is utilized in rheumatic problems, arthritis and neuralgia. Oil is also an ingredient in many ointments, and lotions for treating aches and pains. Rosin obtained is used in paper soap, cosmetics, paint, varnish and polish industries. It is used in the manufacture of disinfectants, insecticides and denaturants. It is also used to arrest minor haemorrhages in tooth – sockets and nose.



Podophyllum Emodi

Common Name : Indian Podophyllum, Himalayan May Apple.
Part Used : Rhizomes, Roots, Fruits.
Habitat : Distributed in northern himalayan region from kashmir to sikkim, abundantly in fir forest in kashmir.

Uses : It is cholagogue, purgative, alterative, anthelmintic, emetic, bitter, bilious, antirheumatic, hydragogue, vermifuge and cytostatic.

It is mainly useful in the treatment of intestinal worms, for treating warts, tumors and posses anti-cancer properties. It also used as hepatic stimulant. It exerts a powerful influence upon the whole glandular system.



Pongamia Pinnata

Family Name : Fabaceae (leguminaceae)
Common Name : Indian Beech, Poongam Oil Tree, Honge, Ponge.
Part Used : Root, Bark, Leaves, Flowers, Seed Oil
Habitat : Pongamia is widely distributed in tidal and beach forests of india.

Uses : Pongamia seeds and oil is anthelmintic, styptic, and depurative. It is useful in rheumatism arthritis, whooping cough, skin alinments and scabies. Seed oil is mainly used in cosmetics, in soap making and as a lubricant. Seed oil is also used as insecticidal, nematicidal and bactericidal.

Flowers are useful to quench dipsia in diabetes and for alleviating vata and kapha.

Leaves are digestive, laxative and useful in flatulence, dyspepsia, diarrhea, leprosy and cough.

Bark is anthelmintic and used in pesticides. Dried leaves are used in stored grains to repel insects. The bark also yields a black gum that is used to treat wounds caused by poisonous fish.
