Abortifacient Herbs of Ayurveda

Abortifacient Herbs is an agent that induces pregnancy to end prematurely and causes an abortion. Its act during the first five weeks of pregnancy as it blocks the action of progesterone so that the uterus sloughs off the embryo.

Abortifacients are strong, powerful herbs and should be use only short periods of time. They act hard to body organs like liver, kidney if taken on regular basis or for long periods of time.

Abrus Precatorius

Uses : Seeds are abortifacient, anodyne, aphrodisiac, antimicrobial, diuretic, emetic, expectorant, febrifuge, hemostat, laxative, purgative, refrigerant and sedative. Vermifuge paste of seeds is applied locally in sciatica, stiffness of shoulder joints and paralysis. Seeds are highly poisonous. Roots are used for gonorrhoea, jaundice and haemoglobinuric bile. Powdered seeds are said to disturb the uterine functions and prevent conception in women. The oil extracted from seeds is said to promote the growth of human hair.

Uses : There are medicinal application of the custard apple tree. The bark and leaves contain annonaine, an alkaloid. A bark decoction is used to stop diarrhea, while the root is used in the treatment of dysentery. A decoction of the leaves is used as a cold remedy and to clarify urine. Annona squamosa Linn., family Annonaceae, is said to show varied medicinal effects, including insecticide, antiovulatory and abortifacient.The fruits of Annona are Haematinic, cooling, sedative, stimulant, expectorant, maturant, tonic. They are useful in anemia, burning sensation. The seeds are abortifacient and insecticidal and are useful in destroying lice in the hair. Leaves are used to overcome hysteria and fainting spells. Fruit is used in making of ice creams & milk beverages.

It gives vitality and vigour and helps in building greater endurance. Ashwagandha has been used in diseases such as rheumatism, leprosy and arthritis. Used to treat general debility, arthritis, depression, chronic fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depressed immunity, infertility and memory loss. It increases the iron content in the blood.

Calotropis Procera

Uses : Calotropis procera plays an important role in improving soil fertility and improved soil water holding capacity. The root bark is febrifuge, anthelmintic, depurative, expectorant, and laxative. The powdered root promotes gastric secretions and useful in asthma, bronchitis, and dyspepsia. Dried whole plant is good tonic, expectorant, depurative and anthelminthic.
Madar root-bark is very largely used in India as a treatment for elephantiasis, leprosy, and in chronic eczema. It also used as antidote substance and for abortive purposes. Leaves are useful in the treatment of paralysis, arthralgia, swellings and intermittent fevers. Flowers are useful in asthma, catarrh, anorexia, inflammations and tumours.

Uses : Carica papaya contains an enzyme known as papain, present in the fruit, stem and leaves.The milky juice is extracted, dried and used as chewing gum, medicine (digestion problems), toothpaste and meat tenderizers. Meat can be tenderized by wrapping it in a bruised papaya leaf before it is cooked.Carica papaya contains many biologically active compounds. Two important compounds are chymopapain and papain, which are supposed to aid in digestion. Papain also is used to treat arthritis. The level of the compounds vary in the fruit, latex, leaves, and roots. Papaya has been used for digestive problems and intestinal worms.The softening and disintegrating qualities of papain (generally in alkaline combination, as with borax or potassium carbonate), have been taken advantage of in the treatment of warts, corns, sinuses, and chronic forms of scaly eczema, cutaneous tubercles, and other hardness of the skin, produced by irritation, etc., and injected into indolent glandular tumors to promote their absorption. Green fruits are used to treat high blood pressure and also used as an aphrodisiac. It is useful in round worm infestation, stomachalgia, dyspepsia, constipation, amenorrhoea, skin diseases and general debility.

It is useful in wounds, ulcers, burning sensations, inflammations, scabies, leprosy, leucoderma, boils, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, fever, ophthalmia, haemorrhages, splenopathy and strangury. Flowers are cardiotonic, refrigerant, febrifuge and tonic. it is useful in cephalagia, burning sensation, insomnia and fever. Leaves are useful in wounds ulcers strangury cough, bronchitis, dysentery etc.
It lowers body temperature to soothe headaches, fevers and burning feet.

Mesua Ferrea

Dried flowers are used for bleeding hemorrhoids and dysentery with mucus. Fresh flowers are useful remedy for itching, nausea, erysipelas, bleeding piles, metrorrhagea, menorrhagea, excessive thirst, and sweating. Oil from the seeds is used for sores, scabies, wounds, and rheumatism.

Momordica Charantia

Uses : It has been used extensively in folk medicine as a remedy for diabetes. In Ayurveda, the fruit is considered as emetic, laxative, antibilous, tonic, stomachic, stimulant and alternative. It has been found to be extremely good in Diabities.

The fruit is useful in gout, rheumatism and subacute cases of the spleen and liver diseases. It is supposed to purify blood and dissipate melancholia and gross humours. It has also been shown to have hypoglycaemic properties (anti-diabetic) in animal as well as human studies. It is Kapha and Pitta suppressant and due to its property it is very helpful in cooling the body so as suppresses the skin related problems caused by excess of Pitta. Due to its bitter taste, it is useful in suppressing the worm infestation.

Peganum Harmala

The fruits of Peganum Harmala are the source of a red dye and an oil. The esteem in which Peganum Harmala is held amongst peoples of the East is extraordinary. Most commonly it is used as an incense. Although there are repeated but vague reports of the employment of Peganum harmala as a traditional hallucinogen, its actual narcotic use in inducing visions has not yet been established beyond a doubt. It certainly has some mindaltering effects including sedation. It shows antibacterial activity and is fairly effective against Protozoans. Its decoction is given for laryngitis. It helps against boldness, period aches, worms and lice.

Uses : Root is said to increase the digestive power and promote appetite. It is a powerful irritant and has well marked antiseptic properties. A liniment made from bruised root mixed with a little bland oil is used as a rubefacient in rheumatism, paralytic affections, in enlarged glands, buboes etc. This herb cures certain cases of leucoderma. It is also useful for other skin diseases and for scorpion-sting. Scraped root is introduced into the mouth of the womb to procure illegal abortion. A tincture of the root is used in secondary syphilis, in leprosy and also in dyspepsia, piles, flatulence, loss of appetite and other digestive complaints. It is a good remedy to check post partum hemorrhage. The milky juice of the plant is used in ophthalmia and in scabies. It is an antiseptic, and is also useful in the management of skin disorders, rheumatism, and mental disorders.
